The Merck Index has a medicinal element, but it is essentially an organic chemical work with the inclusion of useful inorganic substances and a sparate section on organic name reactions. With this edition a start has been made to sweep away the structure ideographs more stereospecific. Nowdays in a modern laboratory the melting point tends to be measured after the infrared and nuclear magnetic resonace spectra, and soon mass spectra will become commnplace. In Future editions of this book the full impactsof the new laboratory techniques will probably induce radical changes in presentations of the subject matter
